USDA Roundtable: Food Loss and Waste Activities from Around the World

Join us on October 19th as the U.S. Department of Agriculture hosts an international roundtable to discuss, “Food Loss and Waste Activities from Around the World.” Webinar speakers will share their work and experiences with national and municipal level governments to reduce food waste and increase food recycling in Denmark, South Korea, Rwanda, Chile, Peru, and the United States.
Panelists will include representatives from the Stop Wasting Food Movement in Denmark, the Natural Resources Defense Council in the United States, the Korea Zero Waste Network Movement, and the Executive Director of the Rwanda Rural Rehabilitation Initiative.
The event will be moderated by Dr. Jean C. Buzby, USDA Food Loss and Waste Liaison.

Selina Juul is one of the global Champions 12.3, Member of the European Commission’s EU Platform on Food Losses and Food Waste, Partner of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)’s SAVE FOOD initiative, Partner of the European Commission’s EU FUSIONS project on food losses and food waste, Partner of the FAO/UNEP Think.Eat.Save campaign, Member of Prime Minister of Denmark's Climate Partnerships for the Food and Agriculture Sector the Trade Sector. Selina Juul is also a Board Member of the Danish Government’s Think Tank on Prevention of Food Loss and Food Waste ONE\THIRD - Selina Juul is an originator of a concept of a think tank on the prevention of food waste. Nina Sevilla (Program Advocate, Food Waste and Food Systems @Natural Resources Defense Council (U.S.)) Nina Sevilla works to ensure we have a sustainable, healthy, and equitable food system for all. She facilitates learnings across cities by sharing successes and lessons learned from NRDC's Food Matters project to a network of partners across the nation. She also works with those partners to run a consumer education campaign, Save The Food, to reduce household food waste. Previously, Sevilla worked to increase food access through child nutrition programs at The Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona. She holds a degree in environmental studies from Bates College and is based in NRDC's San Francisco office. Dr. Kwang Yim Kim (Policy Director @Korea Zero Waste Network Movement (South Korea)) Dr. Kwang-yim Kim is the Director of the Korea Zero Waste Movement Network, a civil society non-profit organization which work for resource circulation. She was the President of Korea Environmental Policy and Administration Society in 2016. She has worked as a senior research fellow in Korea Environment Institute (KEI) for more than 20 years. She conducted many projects on resource circulation, recycling of waste while she was working in KEI that is the leading environmental policy research institute for the Korean government. She has participated in many government committees for environment and climate change. She got the Fulbright Scholarship from the U.S. Department of State in 2000. She received a Ph.D. degree specialized in environmental economics from Texas A&M University, U.S.A. in 1990. Belange Uwizeye (Executive Director @Rwanda Rural Rehabilitation Initiative) Uwizeye Belange is the Executive Director of Rwanda Rural Rehabilitation Initiative (RWARRI), a respected civil society non-profit organization in Rwanda established in 1995 after the Genocide against the Tutsi. He has worked in RWARRI for the past fifteen (15) years, where he started as a Project officer. He has a Bachelor’s degree in Agronomic sciences and a Master’s degree in Project Management. He has participated in the elaboration of the projects and headed several significant projects focusing on food systems, including the “Capacity building the City of Kigali on Food Waste Reduction and Management for greening city”, a project funded by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). He is a passionate learner who enjoys innovations and networking that contribute to the population’s prosperity in the future. Gerardo Canales (Director @ImplementaSur) Gerardo is Director at ImplementaSur (www.implementasur.com) and has more than 20 years of experience in climate change, waste, circular economy and clean energy policy and implementation. At present he works with countries and cities in Latin America, Africa and Asia to identify, develop and implement mitigation actions, develop NDC implementation strategies and plans and other climate related initiatives. Gerardo’s field of primary focus today is waste management and circular economy coordinating at present the projects such as: “Reciclo Orgánicos Latin America”, program to accelerate mitigation action in the waste sector in Chile, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Perú and Uruguay, funded by the Global Methane Hub. Perú’s Organic Waste NAMA, funded by the NAMA Facility and several circularity analysis and strategy development for public and private organizations. Jean Buzby, Moderator (USDA Food Loss and Waste Liaison @USDA) Jean C. Buzby is the USDA Food Loss and Waste Liaison at the USDA’s Office of the Chief Economist. She has worked either directly or indirectly for ERS for more than 20 years. Prior to moving into management as the Chief of the Diet, Safety, and Health Economics Branch in ERS's Food Economics Division, her primary areas of work (as an economist at ERS) were food safety and food consumption research. Jean's food safety research included estimating the cost of foodborne illness, analyzing the legal incentives for firms to produce safer food, and exploring international trade and food safety issues. Her food consumption research was primarily centered on information from the Food Availability (Per Capita) Data System. She is also domestically and internationally known for her research on the amount and value of food loss at the retail and consumer levels in the United States, using data from ERS's Loss-Adjusted Food Availability Data Series.
